About the Author
" To Sir With Love" this very famous novel was penned down by very famous novel writer " E.R.Braithwaite". He was a Guyanese-born-British-American novelist,writer,teacher and diplomat,best known for his stories of social conditions and racial discrimination against black people. He also wrote " A Kind Of Homecoming"about his tour of Africa ," A Choice Of Straws", a novel set in London and " Reluctant Neighbours" a memoir ans treatise about rascism. Braithwaite's numerous writings primarily deals with the difficulties of being ' an educated black man ,a black social worker , a black teacher', and a simple human being who found himself in a set of inhuman circumstances.
About the Book
" To Sir With Love " is an autobiographical novel composed by E .R.Braithwaite. It covers the middle life of narrator after the ending of the second world war , his retirement from the Britans Royal Airforce( RAF) upto the period when he gets mentally and financially stable. The racism prevalent in great britten during the mid - 1940's the time during which " To Sir With Love" takes place is of primary significance in the novel. The narrator cites repeated incidents in which he experience the racism of white Britons,including encounters in the bus , at job interviews , at school ,when searching for housing, at a restaurant with his girlfriend and so on. Story describes that the narrator is an engineer, but to make both ends meet , he accepts the job of a teacher in a rough London East End school. the school is full of troublemaker students who were rejected from other schools, for their misbehaviour. At the beginning , ridiculed and bullied by the students but later calm demenor and desire to see them succeed gradually earn him their respect . Through this novel we understand student - teacher relationship, prejuidice and racism .
Language of the Book and Writing Style
Author have used very simple , clear and straightforward language while composing this realistic novel. Occassionaly he also have used official language according to the need of the description. The novel in 288 pages and 22 chapters , gives insight into the politics of race and class in postwar london.
My Opinion About the Book
I like this novel very much as it describes the transformation of ugly, naughty,and mischeivous students into ambitious , humble and responsible students . It tells us the story of suffering of narrator , though it is an autobiographical novel it also tells us some part of history of great britten . I would like to suggest this novel to every human being .
